I don’t know about you, but I thought that Guy Fawkes night was especially quiet yesterday. Whereas normally fireworks start going off in late October, reaching a climax on the 5th November, this year I’ve only seen a seldom few in the night sky.

Perhaps it’s the recession (though that didn’t stop Halloween being bigger than ever) or maybe people are concerned about the environmental or health and safety aspects – we’ve already heard that virtual ‘nonfires‘ are now taking over from the real thing in Devon and even Guy Fawkes’ home town of York didn’t have any firework celebrations because it was would have been too expensive.

And to top all that off, yesterday the Telegraph asked us if fireworks should be banned completely because of their poor environmental credentials.
